Extractions & Preservation
When a tooth is causing serious pain or putting the rest of your mouth at risk, the right treatment isn’t always about saving it at any cost. Sometimes an extraction is the most protective thing we can do. At Copper Ridge Dental, our approach to extractions & preservation in Phoenix is built around making the best decision for your long-term oral health, not just addressing the immediate problem and moving on.

When a Tooth Can’t Be Saved
Most of the time, our goal is to keep your natural teeth intact for as long as possible. But there are situations in which a tooth has deteriorated to the point that preserving it would cause more harm than good. Severe decay that has destroyed too much of the tooth structure, advanced infection that hasn’t responded to other treatment, significant fractures below the gumline, and overcrowding that’s affecting the alignment of surrounding teeth are all situations where extraction becomes the right call.
The decision is never made lightly. We look at the full picture of what’s happening in your mouth before recommending removal, and we explain exactly what we’re seeing and why extraction makes sense in your specific case.
Root Canals: Preservation Before Extraction
Before extraction is considered, a root canal is often the step that saves a tooth that might otherwise need to come out. When decay or damage reaches the inner pulp of a tooth, infection can develop and spread quickly. A root canal removes infected tissue, cleans and seals the canals inside the root, and allows the tooth to stay in place with a crown protecting it afterward.
Root canals have an outsized reputation for being painful, but the procedure itself is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. The pain most people associate with a root canal is actually the infection before treatment, not the treatment itself. For a tooth that’s still structurally sound enough to restore, a root canal is almost always worth attempting before moving to extraction.
Tooth Extractions: What the Process Looks Like
When an extraction is necessary, we make the process as straightforward and comfortable as possible. Simple extractions involve teeth that are fully visible above the gumline and can be loosened and removed without any surgical intervention. Surgical extractions are needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline, impacted, or positioned in a way that requires access through the gum tissue.
Both types of extractions are performed with local anesthesia, and we talk through what to expect before, during, and after the procedure so there are no surprises. Recovery instructions are specific and clear, covering what to eat, how to manage discomfort, and what signs to watch for as the site heals.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Phoenix
Wisdom teeth are the most commonly extracted teeth, and for good reason. Most adults don’t have enough room in their jaws to accommodate a third set of molars, and when wisdom teeth don’t have space to come in properly, the problems that follow can range from annoying to genuinely damaging.
Impacted wisdom teeth, those that are partially or fully trapped beneath the gum or bone, can cause crowding, push neighboring teeth out of alignment, create pockets where bacteria collect, and lead to cyst formation around the tooth root over time. Even wisdom teeth that do erupt can be so far back in the mouth that keeping them clean is nearly impossible, making them a recurring source of decay and gum problems.
Removing wisdom teeth before these issues develop is generally easier on the patient than waiting until a problem is already underway. Younger patients tend to heal faster, and the roots of wisdom teeth are often not fully formed, making the extraction easier. Dr. Josh Denison evaluates wisdom teeth during routine exams and helps patients understand the right timing for removal based on what’s actually happening in their mouths.
The Preservation Side of the Equation
Extraction is only part of the picture. What happens after a tooth is removed matters just as much as the extraction itself. When a tooth is lost, and the socket isn’t managed properly, the surrounding bone can begin to break down quickly. This affects the stability of neighboring teeth and can complicate future options, such as dental implants.
Socket preservation is a procedure performed at the time of extraction that involves placing a bone grafting material into the socket to maintain the bone volume while the site heals. It doesn’t significantly extend recovery, but it makes a meaningful difference in how the area looks and functions long-term, especially for patients who plan to replace the tooth with an implant later.
